Darkness Visible
Published in Paperback by Harcourt (May, 1985)
Author: William Golding
Average review score:

A wildly imaginative parable about madness and terrorism.
Golding is in top form in this story about the gradual descent into terrorism by twin siisters; and an unlikely "savior" that comes in the form of a man deformed by a bombing raid. Again, Golding proves that creating a mystery amidst thoughtful social critcism leads to a great and imaginiative story. It is dark, strange and stays with you for weeks.

An excellent perspective on how to rate the value of life
Golding's vision of mans dark side and how the fight between good and evil is won by restraint.

In order to get the whole picture the reader needs to submerge into the lifes of all the characters and then pull back away from it all. First then it is possible to see the story and how it unfolds. It is complex and requires patience but the reward is worth it and can be rather refreshing.

I do recommend it

Digital Audio, by Russ Haines
This book, "Digital Audio" is absolutely wonderful. This has to be the best money I've EVER spent!

I am a Musician and a Teacher. The topics covered so well are the very things I have struggled to learn - on my own- since 1985. This book covers it ALL!! Thorough, comprehensive, easy-to-understand and well presented with humor and REAL knowledge of the various elements of digital music today (AND yesterday). Everything one needs to know to create first rate recording projects is right here!

I recommend this book to anyone who needs to know how to create music for digital distribution - be it on CD, the Internet, in a Multimedia presentation - wherever. It is an awesome distillation of the knowledge and experience of a Master.

I only wish I'd had it ten years ago!

Even Steven and Odd Todd
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Kathryn Cristaldi, Henry B. Morehouse, and Marilyn Burns
Average review score:

Wonderful Read
My 8 year old had this book on her school reading list. She loved it and has read it many times. She thought it was really funny and loved the part about the gummy worms on the pizza. Any book that gets a child to read is all right with me.

Its Funny
I read this book in my second grade class. This is a funny book. Even Steven likes everything even. Odd Todd likes everything odd. For example, Even Steven would like 8 pancakes and Odd Todd would like 7 pancakes. Even Steven goes through hard work with Odd Todd. Then, Even Steven notices that odd and even are both good. My favorite part was when Odd Todd and Even Steven win their $50 prize.

republican armys had no chance against the german troops
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 was a dark page in French history, and ended with the destruction of the Second Empire,But even after the surrender and abdication of Napoleon III, the french army continued to battle in the ranks of the Republican armies. The Turcos,The chasseur's d'Afrique,The foreign Legion, The infanterie Legere d'Afrique and the Spahis with a detachment of Papal Zouaves which was dispatched by Pius IX to aid France in the conflict were ready to continue the fighting. Despite the disastrous result of the war, the republican troops took the arms and decide not to surrender but The newly raised republican armys had no chance against the german troops. In January Paris surrendered. This Book covers the last part of the Second Empire with information on the uniforms, eigth full color plates with black and white photos. If you are interesting in the FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR you can also consider the Next Titles The Debacle by Emile Zola, Art, War and Revolution in France, 1870-1871, and a Beautiful title from the master of illustration L'Armee Francaise : An Illustrated History of the French Army, 1790-1885(Edoaurd Detaille)

Great set of plates and photos
The Second Empire has become a more and more popular period of study for many uniform and military historians. This is the first of two books depicting uniforms of Napoleon III's Imperial Guard troops. the Zouaves,Voltigeurs of the Imperial Guard and many more plates from the Imperial troops

In July 1870, France declared war on Prussia in part over a disagreement about a Prussian prince accepting the crown of Spain. By September 1870, a French army had been defeated, Emperor Napoleon III captured at Sedan, France declared a republic, and Paris under siege. In January 1871, Wilhelm I of Prussia was crowned Kaiser Wilhelm I of a unified Germany at Versailles, Paris fell, and France surrendered, losing Alsace and Lorraine and forced to pay huge reparations. Otto von Bismarck, Chancellor of Prussia since 1862, and now Germany, subsequently sought to keep France isolated to prevent the recovery of Alsace and Lorraine.

The Second Empire, under Napoleon III, was a reaction against the bourgeois age of the previous ruler King Louis Philippe in spirit as well as in deed. The army, elevated from tactful obscurity, was re-modelled on Napoleonic lines, and its neglected iconography revived in the form of the eagle, the crowned 'N' and the Imperial bee. What was needed to complete the resurrection was victory in the field. It is hardly surprising that Napoleon and the army were mindful of the great Napoleonic traditions and were anxious to emulate them. Their first real opportunity came with the Crimean War, in which, despite a muddled campaign, the army acquitted itself well. In 1859 it was again successful, against the Austrians this time, with costly victories at Magenta and Solferino. Their next adventure, unfortunately, ended in a humiliating withdrawal, after a protracted anti-guerrilla struggle in Mexico. Meanwhile, back in Europe, Prussia was fast emerging as a challenge to France's military pre-eminence. In concert with Austria, Bismarck first crushed Denmark before turning on Austria herself. The victory at Sadowa in 1866 stunned Europe, and in Paris Napoleon and his advisers set to thinking of a way to counter this new threat. In this first of two volumes looking at the French Army of the Franco-Prussian War, Stephen Shann and Louis Delperier examine the history, organisation and weapons of the French Imperial troops.

Remember there are two volumes this is the Imperial troops there is also the republican troops

Graven Images: The Best of Horror, Fantasy, and Science-Fiction Film Art from the Collection of Ronald V. Borst

A MUST For Every Horror & Sci-Fi Fan, If You Can Get It!
I stumbled across this book about 6 years ago in a sales rack at Crown Books in Topanga Canyon, California. There were only three left, so I picked one up and paid about $11 for it. How I wish I had snatched all three, because it is now impossible to get and some dealers are asking a fortune for used versions (Ron offers the best price and his are new!). One of a kind posters, many that are different versions from the same film and sometimes foreign versions, are artfully arranged and beautifully reprinted throughout this book. The reader can enjoy the fabulous art again and again, as well as learn quite a bit about the history of film posters, lobby cards and one sheets. Ron's narrative about his love for collecting posters is a treat and he paints a great picture with words of what it was like when he and his friends started out collecting. I urge you to visit Ron's shop on Hollywood Blvd. for a look at some truly classic film posters if you just can't seem to find this great book. What can I say but, "Five Thumbs Up!" (And thanks, Ron, for sharing!)

THE QUINTESSENTIAL VINTAGE MOVIE POSTER HORROR BOOK
I have seen the collection in person and let me tell you that this book is phenomenal! . There is no book that comes close to this masterpiece. Ron still sells copies at his store in Hollywood. It is a must for any horror fan. From silent to the 70's it's all in there. There are even some items in his book that are 1 of a kind. Yes, the only specimens left on the planet earth. A feast for the eyes!

Nihilistic Fun
Out of all of Burns' work, I don't consider this his best, but it is definitely the most fun. El Borbah, a character based upon El Santos, the star of popular Mexican Action films, is a fat dude in wrestling tights and mask who solves crimes and kicks ***. While the world runs down in chaos around him, El Borbah just wants to earn a buck fighting crime. Includes stories re. the next step after body-piercing, genetic engineering and fast food chains, and other sorts of weirdness. BUY THIS or the Fantagraphics reprint NOW!

bizzare SFnal detective comic book

Hidden Treasures
Published in Paperback by Crystal Dreams Publishing (March, 2003)
Author: Burns Harrington John
Average review score:

What a Variety!
From his short poems to his short stories, John Harrington Burns writes of a wide variety of characters and situations in Hidden Treasures. This collection includes stories that range from a young boy's time with his Italian grandfather to a young man's encounter with live television in the early 1950's. Mr. Burns' writing gets you involved, not knowing what twists will happen along the way. Very enjoyable and well written.

Wonderful stories!
These short stories are truly "Hidden Treasures". Don't let, Bleeding Hearts & Lady's-Slippers, fool you. This is a chilling story with a chilling ending. Very enjoyable! Memoirs of a Cleavage Stuffer-what a job! This story transported me to another time, and I loved every minute of it. And my favorite, cause it's dear to my heart, The Monday Night Game, where not all is what it appears to be. Of course, there are more stories, all of them a fun read, but the above is just a sampling of what is behind half-closed doors, Hidden Treasures. Mr. Burns is a wonderful storyteller and I can't wait to read his next work, "First Bite."

Hide and Seek: In the Ocean a Pull-The-Tab and Lift-The- Flap Book
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Co (Juv Trd) (April, 1996)
Author: Kate Burns
Average review score:

I love this book!
I bought this book before my son was born to use the illustrations as a sort of template for painting his bedroom walls. He now, at 20 months, loves this book and asks me often to read the "pull book". The colors are bright and the sea creatures are whimsical yet simple. The tabs are fairly sturdy although I have had to glue a couple of them back in place.

A book both an 11-month old and an adult love.
Beautiful, bright colors make this a treat to look at. The flaps and pull tabs are simple and sturdy so that my 11-month old can use them (with a little help). Would make a great present.

The horseless rider : a complete guide to the art of riding, showing, and enjoying other people's horses
Published in Unknown Binding by St. Martin's Press (2001)
Author: Barbara Burn
Average review score:

Packed with invaluable, practical ideas
Barbara Burn's The Horseless Rider provides a guide to riding, showing and enjoying other people's horses. From analyzing a stable's qualities to taking different approaches with different horses, this is packed with invaluable, practical ideas.

Inspiring for the horseless
This book nourished me through many dark days of horselessness, and helped me even see it as an advantage. This is an outstanding book for new riders who want to know how far they can go without the committment of becoming an owner (as far as you want!), or for those who already know they want it all but do not have the resources to have a horse of their own.
